Joel, yes a bit triggering, but a reminder to all that we venture out
with optics intent on observing things and we can pt to speak out about
wrongs we see.
Someone should not have to needlessly die if we can get people to take
us seriously. I thought later that one of the guys may have been
believed, but not a female. But a bit later I got the same  employee to
come out and look in the guy's scope at the drifting boat and they also
repeated the story to him. Someone dropped the ball but it was not us.
We made a few more attempts at contact, to the coast guard, etc,  but
nothing worked....

Anyway, Jeff really is a great birding buddy. Judy

P.S. Apologies to both Judy and Jeff if this was triggering with respect to past trauma.

Subject: [boo] Oregon birders off Panama
Hi BOO folks, Based on the idea that it's always better to consider people as multi-faceted human beings, this seemed like a good time to share this article, featuring both Judy Meredith and Jeff Gilligan who have chimed in here.

Please read it, is all I ask. Thanks to the efforts of Judy and Jeff, the
families of the victims received at least a decent settlement from the
cruise-ship line.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/worldview/drifting-fishermen-die-after-luxury-cruise-liner-sails-past-but-doesnt-stop/article4101302/ Judy has been a good friend of our family for many years, and really a treasure for Oregon birding, in my view. I've never met Jeff in person, but when I read this story, I'm reminded that he showed some real human decency in this instance. All the best, Joel
