I believe that's also how Chris Hedges thinks.

It's an eternal struggle. Human nature being what it is, we'll never attain a
state of Peace and Love. But that is all the more reason to hold up an
unattainable goal.
It's the striving that shapes us, and moves us closer. Whenever we settle back
and think that we've reached some new level in our so called civilization, and
we feel that we can kick back and relax a bit, we begin to slide backward.

Carl,
You have a lot more faith in the possibility of uniting people than I do.
Certainly, there are people who can get along on a superficial level
politically. But as has become evident from when Obama was elected,
and then with Trump, there is a hard right racist population in our
country, and then there are people with racist attitudes which are not
in the forefront, and everyone has been encouraged by our culture to
be self centered, acquisitive, and materialistic. And then you have a
section of our society with socially liberal attitudes, and a fraction
of that section which is caring and humanitarian. And now you have
Trump who is manipulating people so that the divisions will be sharper.

When Bob called me and asked if I would join the ACB Chat List, he
said what it needed was a little stirring up. Attendance on the list was
dwindling.
So we managed to get some emotional stuff going by getting into
political discussions. As hard as I try, I can't think of anyone
campaigning. Sure, there was some serious trash talk, but it pretty
much covered all political parties and candidates. For the most part,
I felt we were learning to discuss issues without needing to trash one
another. I've always felt this was a good use for email lists. A
place where folks could learn to talk to one another, and talk about our
differences without getting all lathered up.
If we can't do that, then we will never reunite our nation. So it's
disappointing when a list is suddenly shut down without allowing any
input from the list users.

That makes no sense. Discussion isn't a problem. Contributing to a

The ACB is a 501-C3 nonprofit charitable institution, and they may
fear that political discussions could put that status in jeopardy.

Subject: [blind-democracy] ACB Chat List has been closed down
Last evening a notice was posted by Deb Lewis announcing the
immediate closure of the ACB Chat List.
No real explanation other than a rambling note telling us that the
ACB could, from time to time consolidates lists, and suggesting we
go to the ACB web page for other lists. Too bad, since the chat
list was at least discussing issues that impact the lives of blind
Americans.
