Hi Mayrie,

Yes, creating RTF markers certainly does require some planning and forethought.
There are Bookshare engineers who are doing just that, which is why it'll be a
while before the marker plan is rolled out. I'm being the messenger between
them and the volunteer group, basically helping them do research.
I really hope that adding RTF markers is an optional activity. There are
volunteers who will refuse to put in markers, and there are others who will do
a lousy job. This group, on the other hand, is SO SO incredibly dedicated and
passionate about Bookshare, that I'm sure everyone here will do a great job, if
they add markers to their books. (Just as a little side note, your dedication
and passion are a constant source of deep admiration and gratitude by the
entire Bookshare staff. We are all in awe of this group. Just so you know.)

Carrie

Hi Roger,

I agree, the simpler the better.

I'd like to know how we're going to be certain that all validators
do this kind of thing. I know that all volunteers are not on this list, not
all have read or know about the volunteer manual that they're supposed to
read, and I can't tell you how many bookshare books I've looked at that
don't even have the proper number of page breaks, one of the few things that
Bookshare actually requires.

And, while I'm at it here, if we don't keep things simple, and
submitters put in some sort of mark up that isn't obviously that to the
serious novice, how can we guarantee that a validator won't remove them?

I think this mark up thing is a good idea. I'm willing, very, to do it, but
I think it needs a lot of forethought and planning before implementation.

Mayrie

Why not? Because those of us who know nothing about html tags would get
confused. It is best to keep it as simple as possible for us nearly computer
illiterate types. In a message dated 9/9/2008 4:14:14 P.M. Eastern Daylight

    Hi all,

This is an excellent idea Why not use tags that are as close to
html
    tags as possible? e.g.

    <index> </index> <title
pages> </title pages> Something like that, and perhaps the
stripper
would understand? If we added the tags, it might make life a lot
easier. I say go for it, but make them as close to existing tags as

possible. Enclose them in < > and make the closing tag with a /

as is normal in HTML. That's what I'd do if I were thee.

Oh, turn on your punctuation to read this message properly, please.
