In my research, I found a lot of criticism of the 2001
movie, including from David's mother. I guess I
thought his last name was Demaret because his mother's
name was, but maybe she remarried.

Rui, after reading your post, I did put in the name
David Vetter into google. There's a very long,
detailed article about him:
http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/1997-04-10/feature.html
if anyone wants to read it. The Vetters were divorced
and David's mother Carol re-married a reporter who'd
written about David. Apparently a pcyshologist (I
think), Mary Murphy was very close to David and was
going to write a book, which he wanted written so
people would know the truth, but after he died the
Vetters withdrew their permission and threatened a
lawsuit. In truth, it seems that David was very
unhappy with his situation and from the age of 8
woujld have temper tantrums and ask questions like
why did they let me get this far? The Vetters' first
child, also named David, had the same condition (it's
genetic) but died as an infant. The doctors wanted to
see if they could prolong David's life and maybe find
a cure for the condition. In a sense, he was a guinea
pig--and a very unhappy one. I found the article
fascinating.
