May be a stupid question, but why does one need an index when any decent computer has a search function? Sure, it may be nice to know what the author felt was important enough to put in an index, but that seems about as important as the do not eat warnings printed all over inedible objects. I've tried to include indexes when I scan just because I figured if nobody wanted it they could remove it, but the whole practice seems rather pointless.
