programming days, smile.

Sorry, I was a software engineer for 25 years, so describing the range as
0-N is second nature to me. I forget that terminology like that is not
second nature to lots of other people. It means that the asterisk will match
anywhere from zero to an arbitrarily large number during its search for
words in titles and authors.

I just did a search for the word "load" and found 1 book that has "load" in
the title (The Glycemic Load Counter).
When I search for "*load", there are 5 books - the original one, 2 books
with Payload, another with Overload, and the last with Reload in the title.
(The asterisk matched 0 characters when it found load, 3 characters when it
found payload, 4 characters when it found overload, and 2 characters when it
found reload. This is what I meant by the asterisk will match 0-N
characters. The number of matching characters will vary with each book it
finds.)
When I search for "load*", there are 3 books - the original book and two
with loaded and loader in their titles.
When I search for "*load*", there are 8 books - the 7 ones listed above plus
a book with Reloaded in the title.

Is this clear now? I'm lousy at explaining such things. Can someone else add
some words so that everyone understands?

Thanks! Carrie

carrie. Can you give samples of your wildcard search. I didn't quite
understand your explannation and I'm a programmer, smile.

Hi gang,

Engineering has put in a wild card feature into the search function. If you
put an asterisk in a search field, it will match 0-N characters. I put in
"*guin" into the search field, and all the books by Ursula Le Guin were
displayed as well as all books that had "penguin" in their titles. Very
cool!

This feature is not fully implemented yet, Engineering is still working on
it, so the syntax may change in the future. They mentioned that they will
need some beta testers of this feature in about 2 weeks time. If you're
interested in helping out, please email me and I'll pass your name to the
appropriate people.

Thanks! Carrie
