Hi, all.
@Evan, Does K-1000 come with a demo trial? I am wondering if the other products, like Omni Page and Fine Reader are accessible with NVDA. I remember using K-3000, but that was more meant for people with more than blindness-related disabilities.
Any further tips are greatly welcomed.
Best,
Al

Well, I don't believe OB has the scan optimization feature that K1000 has. This feature will try various combinations of settings until it gets the best results. Also, I don't think OB has K1000's Ranked Spelling feature, in which you get a spell check in alphabetical order with the number of times each word appears in the document. There are settings in the Ranked Spelling dialogue box that allow you to adjust what the program looks for so you can eliminate some words if you don't want it checking, for example, words with certain prefixes among other possibilities. OpenBook does not have the confidence rating that K1000 has. You can set this, and then while you're scanning, K1000 will tell you if the page it just recognized falls below the rating you set, and give you the exact percentage of confidence it has in its recognition. This tells you immediately if you have a problem page so you can investigate it right then, and not find out later when you have to go find the page again. This is extremely helpful for getting quality scans. I would bet that there are other features K1000 has that OB does not, but I haven't used OB since 2006, so my knowledge of its functionality is out of date. However, I am quite sure that it doesn't have the three features I've mentioned here. I've talked with another person who's on this list who has used OB much more recently than I have, (2012), and who was able to switch to K1000 and who agrees that K1000 is the better of the two.

Also, while I do not recall the details, it is a fact that I've read more reports of people having problems with OpenBook here on this list than those who have K1000. That doesn't mean that noone has ever had trouble with K1000, (no software is perfect), but there is no question in my mind that users have had fewer issues with it than those using OB.

HTH

Evan

Hi Evan,
Can you provide some specific examples in which YOU believe Kurzweil is more superior to Open Book? I have tried using OCR with adobe Reader, but it doesn't work all of the time, and it requires that you press the scan buttons on the printer, which I have, since mine is an MFP series. @Judy S, I'm sorry to hear about that, but I guess we can all learn from our mistakes, just as I learned the hard way about Docu Scan Plus, eh? @Gary Petraccaro, could you clarify more on your point? If one were to scan in material, then it is both based on the screen reader they are using and the scanning programme they are using. I heard some screen readers interact better with inaccessible software than others. @John Diakogeorgiou You are using version seventeen of Omni Page? Does Omni Page insert the page breaks in for you?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi Al,
Any chance of getting them to purchase K1000 instead of OpenBook? It's a superior product in my opinion.

Don't know about your WordPad question.
Evan

Hello, all.
I have been trying to decide whether I should use Open Book nine or Docu Scan Plus to scan in my submissions. I attempted one scan with Docu Scan plus, but the submission ended up having a bad impression for my first book. In the past, I used Open Book until the demo expired, but one great thing I liked about it was that it automatically put in page breaks for you, whereas Docu Scan Plus didn't. In fact, it put in unnecessary links and tables where they were not needed. I experimented with the scanning profile, but all to no avail. Today, after consulting with a fellow volunteer member off-list, I consulted Serotek Support to ask them about using their software for Bookshare submissions. Their response wasn't very encouraging, as they said it was more for personal storage and accessing documents anywhere, rather than using it as a way to scan in books. I must mention that the commission for the blind has purchased a license for me to use Docu Scan Plus and not Open Book, which I am wondering if I should reconsider in getting. Also, is Word Pad a good built-in word-processing programme to put in page breaks? How does one do this? Can you put in a four-digit hex character and then press alternate+X to produce a page break? I'd really appreciate any further tips on how to get started, but for now I think I'll continue proofing until I get my scanning stuff situated.
Best,
-Al
