Nan, it is ok. That first book you validate is always the hardest. If you have
already picked a book to validate, go ahead and open it up in the software of
your choice. Then have a look at it.

Does it have the required page breaks? If so, make sure there is a blank line
before and after each page break. You can do this in Word by replacing ^m with
^p^m^p.

If it has page numbers, make sure there is a blank line before and after each
page number. This can be trickier to do if the page numbers are at the bottom
of the page, but you can make a macro to accomplish this. If they are at the
top of the page, it is easier to add a blank line after the page number with a
replace all.

Does the book have repeating headers (for example, the title of the book at
the top of each page, or the author's name, etc.)? If so, remove those.

Are the page numbers at the bottom of the pages? If so, protect the chapter
headings by placing something on the line above the Chapter. For example, you
might want to have the text read:

  page break
  blank line
chapter (the bookshare tools will strip out this line, protecting the
following line)
  Chapter 1
  text of page
  blank line
  page number
  blank line
  page break

Are there many tabs in the document? Tabs will be removed by the Bookshare
tools, so replace the tabs with a space if it is going to cause a problem, such
as in columns or tables.

Do a spell check of the book, or read the book, to try to discover scanning
errors. A spell check is good, but reading the book is better, because many
scannos are actual words which will not be caught by the spell checker.

When you are satisfied with the book, there are just a few more things.

Make sure there is a copyright page. From the info on the copyright page,
compare it to a source such as www.loc.gov to make sure the copyright
information is correct as put in to the copyright holder and date form when it
was submitted. Be sure the copyright holder is listed exactly as on the
copyright page. It isn't always the author.

As you are uploading (step 2) your book, also check that the title and author
are spelled correctly. You can't always do this by listening to the title or
name, you have to check the spelling. You can usually verify it with a
library's card catalog or amazon.com. Be sure to list the author's name as the
regular name, for example Danielle Steele, not Steele, Danielle.

Then, submit the book for final approval by an administrator.

I might have missed a few other things that others check for in the
reading/checking of the book, and I am sure someone will add more to this.
