[bksvol-discuss] Re: Tab Characters in the Table of Contents

There aren't tab characters in a word table per sé, though most of us use them to create the table.

Tables of contents are a different animal altogether. Many scanning programs scan them as a table, but this is awkward for a speech user and, I suspect a Braille user too. We recommend that tables of contents be converted to text so the user doesn't have to use special commands to move from the chapter name to the page number.

Most short tables should also be treated the same way.

However, there are times when tabular presentations work better. For example, if a book gave rainfall amounts for each State in the United States, this would read awkwardly to someone in straight text format, but would become obvious when presented in a tabular format.

Okay, have I spread enough mud around?

Hi Bob!

Are there tab characters in tables, or are tables within a book different than a table of contents with tabs?

I haven't made a table in Word, so I have no idea what is there. I only have read a table that was printed out from a Word document with the optacon.

You can do a global find and replace of a tab character, changing them all to a space.

No need to do them one at a time.

Sure saves on the typing.

Hi Monica and everyone!

Thanks for the tab command.

When stripping out tabs, should I take each one individually or can I do a Replace All command? I would hate to wreck anything that was meant to stay as it was.

Hi Debby. In Word, the tab character is ^t and in Kurzweil, in case you use
it, it's \t

Hi Bob!

How do I search for a tab character? I don't know what the symbol is?
