I find it very offensive to read books written about blind people, fiction I
mean, where the blind person asks to feel someonne's face. I have only
known one blind person who did that, a girl at school, and we avoided her
like the plague!

it is bitterly cold here and although the snow has stopped, even my son, who
is an outdoors lover, says he is not going out today because of the high
winds, which makes the chill factor well below zero.

HI E,

Well put post. When I said never, on the counting steps, it is rare. I have
on occasion had people ask me if I would like to feel their face and for me
it is a bit uncomfortable. I usually just laugh it off.

Yes, if more of us could have good employeement it would be life enhancing.
I have been fortunate in that I have worked most of my life. It does make a
difference and I am grateful.

When I first moved out west in 94 I was very organized since I only brought
what I really needed. Now after 12 plus years I have so much junk, well....

Off to get organized:)

I actually do sometimes count steps if i am teaching my dog to recognize a
turn. But usually I never do that. I can hear walls though and notice
most people cannot. The wall or object has to be a certain height and
things like rain and snow interfere with me hearing objects.

Other myths we might as well shatter include the one unfortunately about
blind people not being bigots because they canot see skin color. I also
doubt stories about blind people being more honest than the rest of
society. I do think the belief that we are angry and frustrated is true
but that is because so much of what makes being blind difficult comes from
things other than actually having no sight. For instance if we had decent
public transportation in this country more disabled people might be able to
work. Living poor is harder than having a job and being productive. Being
productive is a definite mood enhancer. I wax a bit sarcastic but the idea
is meant truly. It is my sense of humor I find I sometimes lack in these
situations. This list reminds me of humor and I do appreciate all of
you. By the way I never ever have asked somebody to feel his or her face
and find the request offends my sense of courtesy.

By the way, it is sneeting here that is snowing and sleeting at the same
time. Please send good wishes for the power to stay on.

E.
