I don't think anybody was talking about changing them one at a time. She was trying to figure out how to enter the character into Word's Find and Replace box in order to do a replacement of all of the optional hyphens in the book. But she could have used the clipboard for that as well, I presume, instead of using the alt method.

Nice thing in Kurzweil, is just to do this, find your "long dash," or "single quote," etc. highlight it and copy to the clipboard, control H, replace all, and you're done. Rather that than changing all one at a time when there can be 4500 of them, etc. :) Curtis Delzer----- Original Message ----- From: "EVAN REESE" <mentat3@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2008 5:30 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Removing Optional HyphensYour welcome. It's a great method because it is so general. It works in allprograms. You don't have to learn special keyboard combinations to get the special characters for each program. It worked perfectly! It's great tohave those hyphens gone now. Also I've now learned a neat little trick for finding the alt commands for characters. Thanks again, Allison----- Original Message ----- From: "EVAN REESE" <mentat3@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2008 7:12 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Removing Optional HyphensWhat I would do is find an example in the book, then hit the 5 on thenumpad until JAWS tells me the ASCII value of that character. Then, go tothe Find menu and type alt-0 and the three digit number of the optional hyphen character in there. I think that should work. It said it madezero replacements, and sure enough when I checked the file, the optionalhyphens were still there. I am using a different version of Word-Word 2002. That's the most current version that I have. I looked it up in the help and it says to use ^- I alsowent through the menus in the Replace dialogue and had Word auto insertit, and it put ^-. Maybe we have different versions of Word? I'm running 2003. Odd. That is actually the code for a soft return. There are none of those in my book. So if anyone has another suggestion I'd appreciate it. I have a book where there are several of them inside words. This breaks up the words and makes them difficult to read. Rather than replacing them one-by-one, I'd like to replace them all atonce. With most unusual characters, I can do a find and replace, butit doesn't seem to be working with this one. In part because I don't know how to create an optional hyphen. I looked at the JAWS marks that one can find by pressing insert 4, but it's not in thatlist. I tried looking on my special alt characters cheat sheet, andit's not on there either. Lastly, I tried selecting and copying the character and pasting it into the find and replace box, but itdoesn't seem to want to paste. In fact when I tried, it deleted allmy spaces in the book and made it into a log strand of words.Yikes. I could luckily undo that easily enough, but I still have myoptional hyphens cluttering up my book. BTW, I'm using MS Word 2002 and JFW 9.0. Thanks in advance for any help.
