Thanks Evan for the below suggestion. It worked perfectly! It's great to have those hyphens gone now. Also I've now learned a neat little trick for finding the alt commands for characters.

Thanks again,
Allison

What I would do is find an example in the book, then hit the 5 on the numpad until JAWS tells me the ASCII value of that character. Then, go to the Find menu and type alt-0 and the three digit number of the optional hyphen character in there. I think that should work.

Hi again,

I just tried the ^- method again and it did not work. It said it made zero replacements, and sure enough when I checked the file, the optional hyphens were still there. I am using a different version of Word-Word 2002. That's the most current version that I have.

Thanks,
Allison

Hi Allison,

Are you sure? I looked it up in the help and it says to use ^- I also went through the menus in the Replace dialogue and had Word auto insert it, and it put ^-. Maybe we have different versions of Word? I'm running 2003. Odd.

Cheers,
Jake

Hi Jake,

No. I'd already tried the ^-. That is actually the code for a soft return. There are none of those in my book. So if anyone has another suggestion I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Allison

Hi Allison,

If memory serves me correctly on this befuddled Friday afternoon, using ^- will represent an optional hyphen in Microsoft Word.

Cheers,
Jake

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Removing Optional Hyphens

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know how to do a global find and replace of optional hyphens? I have a book where there are several of them inside words. This breaks up the words and makes them difficult to read. Rather than replacing them one-by-one, I'd like to replace them all at once. With most unusual characters, I can do a find and replace, but it doesn't seem to be working with this one. In part because I don't know how to create an optional hyphen. I looked at the JAWS marks that one can find by pressing insert 4, but it's not in that list. I tried looking on my special alt characters cheat sheet, and it's not on there either. Lastly, I tried selecting and copying the character and pasting it into the find and replace box, but it doesn't seem to want to paste. In fact when I tried, it deleted all my spaces in the book and made it into a log strand of words. Yikes. I could luckily undo that easily enough, but I still have my optional hyphens cluttering up my book. BTW, I'm using MS Word 2002 and JFW 9.0.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Allison
