Hi Sue.

I'm a sighted volunteer, but I have to log in to get anywhere, so am I a member? I just validated my first book and the acknowledgement message didn't mention
anything about "Credits."

On the other hand, I think I might actually enjoy downloading a book or five or
six. Now, what does that make me?

Hi Marilyn,

Are you a member of bookshare.org, or are you a sighted volunteer? We were
just assuming you are a member. <smile> If you are eligible, a
print-disabled person, a subscription gives you the right to download books
from the collection.

Hi Mayrie.

First, thank you for the answer about Tabs/Spaces at the beginning of
a paragraph. Very helpful and totally understood.

Second, how much is a subscription? What does a subscription give
you the right to do?

Thanks SO MUCH,
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

I'm not Sue, but I'll answer. Volunteers are not exempt
from paying for their bookshare subscriptions. It is just possible
to earn a free subscription by working it off, earning $2.50 toward
the cost of each year's subscription for each book validated, or
submitted. So, we don't automatically get a free bookshare
subscription, but can earn one. Does that answer your question
sufficiently? Just ask more, if I haven't answered all that you
want to know. Everyone is willing to answer questions.

Peace,
Mayrie

Hi, Sue. Thanks for answering so fast.

I thought volunteers didn't have to pay anything. Was I wrong?

Hi Marilyn,

The credits are used to pay for your next subscription. If you
earn enough,
you won't have to pay anything when it is time to renew your
subscription.
The site keeps track of it automatically, and you can check on how
much
credit you have earned by clicking on "my account."

Thanks, Mayrie. I thought I'd better make sure the process was
still the
same, before putting the finishing touches on a couple of books.

One other question: Has the amount of credit for validating
changed? The
Volunteer Manual said 50 cents, as I expected, but theVolunteer
Home Page
says $2.50 for both submitting and validating.

Thanks again,
Paula

Hi Paula,

Yes to both questions. Chapter headings still need
to be
protected by something above them. And tabs still need to be
replaced with spaces for the reasons you state.

So glad to have another submitter!

Peace,
Mayrie

Hello,

After a much longer than expected break from submitting
books, I am
getting re-acquainted with the proper procedures. I read the
Volunteer
Manual, which is very well done, but I have a couple of
questions that >do
not seem to be addressed
there.

I recall that it used to be helpful to put something at the
top of
pages that did not have headers, to keep text such as chapter
titles >from
being stripped. Is this still necessary?

Also, tabs used to be removed in the process of converting
books to
DAISY format. It was recommended that all tabs be replaced with
spaces
prior
to submitting books, to keep words from being wrongly joined
when tabs
were
stripped. Is it still best to get rid of tabs?

Thanks,
Paula
