Hi Jim,

You are acting wisely in my opinion. There's no need to grab these public domain books because they are freely available for download, and for those who want to have some organization in their libraries, and who are willing to pay for somebody to organize your material, the Samizdat site fills the bill more than adequately.

Friends, you can get Richard Seltzer's entire collection of British Literature, some three thousand books on three CD's for $30.00. That ends up being about $0.01 per book. He has a wealth of other CD's and DVD collections by author by genre by geographic region and so on. The small collections are priced at $15.00 I think, something like that. He will, if you contact him, even place his stuff on an SD card or a CF card if you send him the media. So, no, there's no need to spend good money on Bookshare's part.

The idea of having a special request form for a Public Domain book makes sense. I bet some of us volunteers could fulfill these requests if we were allowed to do so. We could download 'em, I have five of Seltzer's collections and could probably furnish any of the stuff in them with no problem. I've got Brit Lit, American Lit, Children's Lit, Religion and his set of books on The Middle East and on India. <smiling> All public domain and all sitting here in my office, I can hold them in the palm of my hand, some six thousand books, give or take. Hey, talk to Seltzer, he might even send you his CD's or his entire collection on DVD, he has that too. Shoot, you got one DVD you've got his whole collection. Anyway, if I had the title, I could put a given title on step One with PDR in the title. PDR would stand for Public Domain Request. Whatcha think?
