Hi,

I also scan a lot of library books, and as long as they aren't battered to
begin with, I've never had a problem breaking spines, even in the days when
I scanned two pages at a time. So, if you want to use the library, you
needn't worry overmuch.

I second Jamie; I use an OpticBook in single page and it is faster than my
older Epson inn dual page and far easier on hands and books. We routinely
use library books with great results.
