Hi poetry Manglers, Isn't mangling something you do to nice tablecloths to smooth out the wrinkles so that it will cover all the imperfections? LOL, Tom

Dear Jill,

You are right. Too much effort with the poetry is futile at this point. Volunteers and staff discover new tricks at such a pace, that I thought I'd ask.

I'm going ahead with the project, with the maxim, less is more, in mind. I'll make sure the format the scanner supplied is consistent. Tolkien fans who want to study his work in depth, will understand the content. I guess I was just speculating how electronic braille and voice might evolve. A little of the grace of the verse will be lost in translation, but the content will be obvious, and some stray numbers aren't a hardship compared with not having the book at all. It's kind of like a text book.

I've gained a world of respect for people who scan and validate textbooks. Cookbooks, too, must need extra attention. How they manage with math and charts and graphs, etc. is more than I'm ready to learn right now.

I don't think there's enough demand for the 12 volume History of Middle-earth to make it a likely choice for NLS to produce. I guess that makes it perfect for Bookshare and the format issues notwithstanding, I feel fortunate to have a way to make it available. .

Your advice is always sensible. Thanks for taking time to answer.

Having a system to ensure preservation of page numbers is the right priority. Poetry can wait. Thanks to everyone out there who continues to prove the impossible is possible.

Always with love,

Lissi

It is my opinion that at this stage of Bookshare's technical equipment, trying to do a reasonable job with this poetry is a losing battle. If Kenneth Cross, who does very careful scanning, can't even get the page numbers recognized by the Bookshare equipment, I wouldn't even consider attempting anything as involved as you are proposing to do. This is where approaching NLS would make sense to me. Jill
