Then we'll have to borrow a supercomputer from NASA to do the OCR or there will be a lifetime of scans on the hard drive waiting to be converted after only a few days. Although maybe we could turn bookshare into one of those distributed computer projects like SETI@home where we borrow all those computers connected to the internet when no one is using them.

Meanwhile, I have a scan to submit and a proofed book to check in.

Hi Evan. Technically, the scanning device doesn't have to transmit all of
the 500 scans in a minute. It is very common for devices to snap pictures
rapidly and then send them to a computer at a slower, more even pace. Most
digital cameras used for scanning have internal memory, so the transfer rate
to a computer or even to a wiriness network could be done more slowly. Think
of it as a batch mode scan on steroids. (grin)

Hmmm, I don't think any PC made right now could keep up with the flood of
data that taking 500 images per second would generate. There's not even any
communications protocol that I know of that would deliver that much data to
the PC for processing, even if the computer could do it. In a few years,
though, who knows? They might have to build a scaled-down version for PC's
that would be more manageable, but would still be much better and faster
than what we have now.

Wonder if it will work with K1000 and other software like Openbook.

This scanner sounds awesome. Too bad I just bought another opticbook,

It seems like every time I fall in love with a piece of technology, along
comes another one in short order that is even more delectable than the
last.
Alas, a sign of the times.

It's way cool the way they're doing it! Thanks for posting about this,
Melissa.

Sounds like it will be a few years before it's available, but sure
could
help us get more books up when it does become available.
