Thanks for the explanation, Tom.

I do get rid of those, if the subitter hasn't already,
as I read, but I'm glad to learn I can get rid of them
more quickly by using a global replace.

Is there some way I can replace non-optional hyphens
in sentences with en dashes other than manually as I
read? I tried using a hyphen from the keyboard and the
optional hyphen (which, of course, now that I know
what that is) didn't work? I thought I had done it
successfully, but now as I'm validating I see they all
changed to em dashes even when they weren't supposed
to (I changed them by replacing using find rather than
a global replace), and I want to change those that
should be hyphens back but I can't seem to do
it with a replace.

BTW, if you're who I think you are, I'm glad to see
you haven't totally desserted us (smile). You're too
valuable an asset here on the list.

Cindy

Cindy, I hope I can explain this so it makes ssence.
Words at the end of a
line, as you know can end up hyphenated. , Office
Word calls these hyphens,
"optional" since if the page width is changed, they
become un-necessary.
But since it's a scanned image comming in Word
doesn't know any better and
of course leaves them in. but refers to them as
optional. They MUST !go to
allow the speller and the text reader to read
properly. At least that been
my experience to date. Not removing them has caused
several of my books to
be rejected. Turning them off in the tools menu
does not elininate them.
