lol i agree d00d :-)

Seriously, though, that is a good rule of thumb. I once was a student of, and am now instructing at, an academy which teaches blind people how to use computers, both inside and out, as well as networking and other concepts, and in the chapter I'm lecturing on now, one thing they say is to respect people's time and bandwidth. Americans, and even many Canadians, often don't know what it's like to have their bandwidth limited because most ISP'S over here don't limit you at all, mine included. You can upload and download as much as you want, and they won't say a thing. Outside of North America, people are limited, and if they go over their limits, they have to pay extra, or their connections are slowed down almost to the point of unusability. You may think an email that is 35 kilobytes isn't much, but if you send multiple emails of that size which will be growing constantly as more and more is added to them because of overquoting, and if multiple people, like you, send multiple 35 kilobyte emails which get longer and longer because of overquoting, they really pile up, and when your limit is 60 GB of both upload and download, you can't afford to receive fifty emails a day which are 35 KB or higher because everyone sending those emails doesn't think they're too large and will affect anyone too badly.

Hi all,

Although it is a good idea to leave some quoted material so that the thread can be kept in tact, overquoting is never a good idea. There are several reasons for this:

First, on a technical list like this one, long strings of two to seven messages can clog up the archives so that nobody can find anything.

Second, people like Daria have to pay by the byte for their internet access. the longer a message is, the more bytes are downloaded by the Cell Phone, increasing the byte count for the month. It would be courteous if people would be mindful of this and refrain from overquoting.

Third, people in foreign countries, notably India, have to pay for their internet access by the byte. this includes home computers and computers in Internet cafes.

Just an FYI, many lists are now beginning to ask that "me too" messages be kept to a minimum. They serve no point and can be sent privately to the original poster.
