Volunteers, There are four items in this email - a reminder, a clarification, and two announcements. A reminder about the Promo Code: Volunteers been writing in with names of people referred for a trial Bookshare membership or stories of the creative ways of recruiting them. Be sure to have those you refer enter the Promo Code as they sign up: VGM2010 A clarification - Recently I asked that all current members adjust the privacy settings in their Bookshare file so that their email address is automatically visible to others in the book submission workflow. This eliminates a step for staff and greatly speeds the process for volunteers. We are making volunteer sign-up interface changes that will make visibility required for new volunteers. What I meant to communicate previously is that this new transparency in workflow will eventually become standard for all volunteers even though it is not scheduled to be implemented in the upcoming registration interface change. The announcement was intended to give all volunteers the opportunity to substitute a more anonymous email in their Bookshare Volunteer registration should they wish to retain some degree of anonymity as our submission workflow becomes more streamlined. Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. An announcement - Some of you may have noticed multiple copies of the book "Summer of Secrets" in the queue with a "Hold for" prefix. This is a book we are using to train new volunteers in response to the large number of new volunteer candidates this month. Don't worry. It's not a mistake! It is the first step in a procedure that will result in a more self-service approach allowing new volunteers training themselves. Eventually we will have a series of public domain books of increasing difficulty for volunteers to learn on. If you would like to volunteer as a future tester for this new system please contact me. A final announcement - Looking back on 2010 we want to recognize those who have gone out of their way as volunteers. Records at Bookshare make it easy to calculate how many books someone has worked on. Measuring the human touch takes more than our databases. We want to honor those who are good mentors -- whether they call themselves by that name or not. For that we need your help. Who were the most important volunteers in your work this past year? Who do you turn to when you have a tough question? A time crunch? Need for support? Send me their names and a brief explanation of why you think they deserve recognition among our Bookshare Volunteer mentors of the Year for 2010. Share the Gratitude for Bookshare with a Free Trial Membership for 1 Month Bookshare Volunteers, We think that Bookshare ought to be shared - and we think there is nobody better than a Bookshare volunteer to tell us who we should share it with. So, from now until the 15th of February, we will offer one free month of Bookshare membership to anyone who a volunteer refers. A free month to: * Get comfortable with our interface * Test the breadth and quality of our vastly expanded collection * Help you win the contest How do we know you referred them? Because: * You send us their name and email address * They enter this Promo Code in Step 3 as they sign up: VGM2010 What's in it for you? Each month the volunteer who has referred the most new members gets to pick books to be added to the collection. A donor has given us enough to start the contest offering * Two books for the winner in the beginning of December * Three books for the winner in the beginning of January * Five books for the winner in the beginning February * Ten book for the overall winner Just to make it interesting: * No one may win more than one month * But monthly winners are still eligible for the overall prize * The judges are fickle and may stick in some random rewards for people supporting the cause behind the scenes -- things like improving book quality, filling series gaps, or otherwise supporting the Bookshare volunteer team! A volunteer will only be counted toward your total once they have submitted proper Proof of Disability. You won't forget to send us the names and emails of those you refer but remember to remind them use the Promo Code: VGM2010 Thanks for being a Bookshare volunteer!
