I think you can remove the part about removing extraneous blank lines from your check list. As I understand it the Bookshare tools automatically remove those for us.

Hi, Reggie, I have yet to manage tables. Right now, I'm proofreading
fiction. I'll tell you a little story if you don't mind. I have a Skype
account and I know somebody who will scan books for Bookshare. She is so
careful and meticulous that she ends up proofreading what she submits. I
had a conversation with her on Skype and she literally walked me through
the process of formatting a file for proofreading. After this
conversation, she sent me some attachments which I wrote down in my own
words. I have a BrailleNote mPower 32 which acts as a stand-alone device
or as a Braille display when it's in terminal mode. Every time I start a
project, I go through those procedures I've written down and follow them
before actually starting to read, i.e., making sure the font is in Times
New Roman and in 12 pt. type, making sure the pages will be in legal
size to prevent soft page breaks, making sure the paragraphs are
presented correctly (you can bet your life I'm not going to remember the
subtleties of formatting paragraphs, so of course I'm relying on the
written-down procedure). Other things like removing extraneous blank
lines and the like are all in the procedures stuff I wrote down. I was
also fortunate to get a list of common OCR errors to watch out for.
Sometimes it's obvious what the word must be based on the context of the
words surrounding the word with the error. I really like it if the
submitter keeps a copy of his/her file so I can email with copies of the
problem text and be sure of an answer. I don't know if this little story
helps you out at all, but I know people on the list have helped me out.
I hope you'll relax and only do what you can manage. I tend to do one
book at a time from start to finish and I will allow myself to proofread
two chapters a day. The length of the book dictates how many sessions I
might need to complete it. Sometimes a book will take a little over two
weeks and sometimes more than a month. Have a good week and happy
proofreading. Regards, Kim Friedman.

Thank you Scott and thanks especially to that technical writer! What a
gem that person is. Definitely will peruse when done and ask here if my
inability to work with manuals gets in my way if it does. Must say here
publically, with great appreciation, that Lissi has offered to walk me
through things I should know that are new and that Elizabeth has sent me
a TXT copy of the manual, although this one will be most likely more up
to date. I so appreciate these folks and also those who gave me
encouragement. As I told Lissi, I think I will need to do as someone
here suggested, possibly Evan, and take things in little bites and not
expect so much perfection from myself. Looking at how much had changed
all in one lump was just too daunting so I will begin the process of
learning over and if something is incorrect I will ask what to do to
make it better. I will also ask for a while that when I need a new book
to proof that someone here give me an idea which ones will be the
easiest for me to proof until I get my understanding of things under me
again, and then I can tackle something, such as tables, after that when
I am feeling more comfortable. Thanks again, and thanks to Scott and
that wonderful technical writer! Reggie

Good morning all,

A Silicon Valley technical writer who is an expert in the type of wiki
we use donated her entire holiday vacation of 40 hours to coming in to
Bookshare to edit and reorder the manual. The end result will be a wiki,
DAISY and an RTF version. They edditng is still underway still underway.

You can always copy the parts you need and paste them in a Word file
for easy reference.

Remembered reading but at the time thought it was directed at
scanners. Now I wish even more fervently I had a copy so I could
search at will.

I wanted to check the procedure for footnotes, so I went to the
volunteer manual online. Could I find any reference to footnotes in

the proofreader section? Of course not! Could I use the search
function at the top of the page? No! Did every little move take a

couple minutes before anything came back? Sure!
The online manual is a pretty frustrating experience, as it has been

for quite a while.
I am using an older version of Jaws, but so what. This manual
shouldn't be such a pain. Why does it have to be so difficult to
find some info quickly?
It leads me to figure that it's way more trouble than it's worth,
and just take my best guess.
Grumble grumble grumble.
Tracy
