It is also important for staff to realize that not only do volunteers not have the newest software and computers, but we may not even have all the old ones or know how to use them. An example that comes to mind is the list of the top submitters and proofers that was recently sent to us. I was curious enough that I tried to open it to take a look, but my computer told me that I did not have the proper software to read it and then offered to search the Internet for something that would read it. I was taken to Microsoft where I could download something that would read spreadsheets. I backed out and said forget it. I was curious about the list, but I was not curious enough to jump into learning another software that I was totally unfamiliar with. My experience tells me that is extremely time consuming and attended by much frustration and exasperation.

There is a file converter which allows this format to be read by MS Word
2003.  I no longer have the link for it, but one could probably do a google
search and find it.
However, it is important for staff to remember that not all volunteers have
the newest software much less the newest computers.  I use a desktop
purchased in 2003 and use Office 2003, but I did get the file converter that
enables me to read dox format.  Also just added 1 gb of memory and got a new
battery for my mother board--all this is less expensive than a new computer!

Your experience with Lissi is echoed by others and the appreciation from
several new or returning volunteers to the members of this list as a whole
seems genuine. List member do good scanning and proofing work and persist
in it but the generosity evident by members of this community in addition
is exceptional.

Recently we posted the attached simple guidelines that we use to evaluate
how difficult a book will be to scan. I recommend that you look for Level
2 books. The Dragonlance books that Grace is promoting are maybe a high
Level 2 or low Level 3 because the Chapter headings are in a font that
sometimes is hard to OCR.

A Silicon Valley technical writer who is an expert in the type of wiki we
use donated her entire holiday vacation of 40 hours to coming in to
Bookshare to edit and reorder the manual. The end result will be a wiki,
DAISY and an RTF version. They edditng is still underway still underway.

I wanted to check the procedure for footnotes, so I went to the
volunteer  manual online.  Could I find any reference to footnotes in
the  proofreader  section?  Of course not!  Could I use the search
function at the top of  the  page?  No!  Did every little move take a
couple minutes before anything  came  back?  Sure!
The online manual is a pretty frustrating experience, as it has been
for  quite a while.
I am using an older version of Jaws, but so what. This manual
shouldn't  be  such a pain.  Why does it have to be so difficult to
find some info  quickly?
It leads me to figure that it's way more trouble than it's worth,
and  just  take my best guess.
Grumble grumble grumble.
