Hi, Misha, My only experience with reading a document with columns is our church bulletin. It is written in two columns, and I have to use a command in my screen reading program to move between the columns. The document format is .doc so sometimes I save the bulletin in a different program to eliminate the column breaks. I imagine there are other documents formatted with columns, but I'm just as happy not to have encountered any! The first time I found one in a book I was proofing, I submitted what I thought was a well proofed book. But the page that comes up after you upload the book said there was one less page break than page numbers. I said that can't be right--and I cancelled the submit. I paged through the book and everything was ok, just as I thought. I submitted it again, again one too few page breaks. I thought maybe there is a section break that didn't get converted to page break somehow. No, ^b in find found nothing. Finally I decided I'll try anything and put in ^n (I'm sighted so I thought if there are multiple columns on a page I would have seen it). Bingo, one column break. I used replace to put in a page break with blank lines around it, then submitted again. Voila, the number of pages and page breaks agree. So, apparently, you can have a column break but still only one column on a page. I don't know how to create a page like that, but apparently someone's ocr program did. I'd be interested to know, if text is set up in columns on purpose, does a screen reader tell you when you have moved from one column to another, or does it just keep reading on as though nothing was different?
