You generally don't have to read the whole thing to make a judgment on the quality. Just check out the preliminary material, (usually the poorest quality part because stuff in there tends to be harder to scan, and a lazy proofreader will either not look at it or not fix it), and then read the first ten or fifteen pages. It's not likely that the quality of the book as a whole will be much worse or better than that. If the quality of the text is good in those ten or fifteen pages, then it's likely to be pretty good the rest of the way through, and vice versa.

Hi John,

I think Gary's asking if the copies currently on Bookshare need
rescanning.
He has access to copies of the books now and could rescan them, but won't
have soon.

I have 4 books soon to be given to a library.  They are:
Jim Butcher, Side Jobs and Changes
Niven and Pournelle's Inferno, and
Diane Duane's Wizard's Holiday.
I can't check these until I renew my subscription and that won't be for a 
while.
I'd appreciate it if someone could check these titles and tell me if they 
need redoing.  Once I send these books, they won't be available to me.
