Could the word before the period be a plural possessive noun? Could it be
the end of something a character is quoting? I normally see that apostrophe
after the period, but I think I may have seen that in a British book once or
twice. Otherwise I'd think, as Evan said, that it might have been a fleck of
something on the page when it was scanned.

When there is an apostrophe right before a period at the end of a sentence,
is it supposed to be an ellipsis or just one period with no apostrophe? Or,
