Field Assistants Needed for Shorebird Research in Interior Alaska

I am looking to hire two field assistants for a Master's project investigating
the distribution and breeding biology of Whimbrels in Interior Alaska. The
Whimbrel is a large tundra-breeding shorebird recognized as a species of
conservation concern in Alaska and throughout its range. This season's
research includes a search for Whimbrels in Interior tundra areas accessible
from the Alaska Highway System (e.g., Dalton, Richardson, and Steese Highways)
during the spring/early summer Whimbrel display period.

Field work will begin in earnest following spring semester finals (May 10),
although some orientation and training in Fairbanks may necessarily precede
finals. The 2-person crew will conduct point-count surveys of Whimbrels and
other shorebirds along pre-selected transect routes, sampling potential
Whimbrel habitats over a maximum of 6 weeks, between approximately May 13 and
June 15. Two assistants, one senior and one junior, are required for safety
reasons, including searching areas within possible bear country. The lead
technician will receive approximately $13/hr (overtime at $19.50/hr) and the
associate technician $10/hr ($15/hr for overtime) for up to 8 weeks. The
latter is a typical salary for an assistant position with close supervision in
wildlife biology at UAF. The senior position's salary reflects an individual
with greater experience and more project responsibility. To maximize the
number of areas sampled during the period of peak Whimbrel detectability, the
crew should expect to do field work for 6 days/wk, for up to 10 hours per day.
The crew will be paid by the UAF Coop Unit.

The senior crew member must necessarily be familiar with the identification
(both visual and aural) and behavior of all boreal birds expected for the
Interior at this time. Preference will be given to candidates with desired
bird survey and remote camping, fieldwork, and/or orienteering experience.
Candidates should expect challenging environmental conditions (rain, insect
harassment), hiking long distances over uneven terrain with a moderately sized
daypack, and potential bear encounters. Candidates should also be mature,
self-motivated, and work well in a small crew in remote settings. The crew
must meet all training requirements of UAF/Coop Unit. A Coop Unit vehicle (and
fuel) will be furnished; driver's license is required. Scientific (e.g., GPS,
binoculars), camping (e.g., tent, food), and safety (e.g., shotgun, ammo, bear
spray) gear will be provided, however crew members must provide their own field
clothing.

include a resume with references and details about any prior UAF safety
training. I am based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
