This is considered to be the definitive word on tree swallows, bluebirds and purple martins by those of us that pay way too much attention to such things:

Lots of great info on how to deal with starlings and sparrow competition with martins available on the purplemartin.org website including:

https://www.purplemartin.org/purple-martins/competitors/64/non-native/

So far I have trapped 28 starlings this spring.

Tree swallows will compete with BBs for nest boxes, best solution is pairs of nestboxes 10-25 feet apart with the pairs separated by at least 300 feet. This source says 10 feet, other sources say the ideal is about 20 feet. My pairs are about 20 feet apart.
