21 March 2008 Waterbird numbers continued to be relatively low yesterday at the transient lakes. None of the transient pools other than McElroy had more than a dozen birds. There were approximately 400 ducks at McElroy with Blue-winged Teal accounting for about half. Blue-winged outnumbered Green-winged yesterday for the first time this spring. Previously reported species were present with few divers. A Ross's x Snow Goose hybrid was observed which departed after a visit by an adult Bald Eagle. Shorebird highlights included 40+ American Golden-Plovers and about 100 Pectoral Sandpipers. A single Brewer's Blackbird was observed on the WKU farm and a Vesper Sparrow was present along Shaker Mill road. 22 March The heavy overcast and northish winds accounted for a nice fallout of birds today. Although the number of Blue-winged Teal was lower, a nice flock of divers was resting on McElroy this afternoon. The shorebird highlight was a basic-plumaged Long-billed Dowitcher. Following is a list of species present today: Canada Goose Gadwall American Wigeon Mallard Blue-winged Teal Northern Shoveler Green-winged Teal Canvasback Ring-necked Duck Greater Scaup (~15) Lesser Scaup (200+) Bufflehead Ruddy PB Grebe Horned Grebe Merlin (Stopped for lunch then departed northward) American Golden-Plover (~25) Both Yellowlegs Pectoral Sandpiper (~400) Long-billed Dowitcher Wilson's Snipe Tree Swallows American Pipits David L.
