Jim Arnett and I birded at several places today. We kept hearing about people
seeing Sandhill Cranes, but I didn't see a one until I got back home to the
farm, where Wallace told me they had been passing over virtually the entire
day. About 500 pm we still had two flocks pass by just to the southeast.
Based on what Jane & Pat Bell reported this morning, it seems as though the
birds were using a very narrow flight corridor today that was taking them
south through the eastern part of Jefferson County. Wallace mentioned that
most had been flying over virtually the same patch of sky. Jim and I even
visited Cecilia early this afternoon and didn't see a single one either on
the ground or in the air. We did see a tardy House Wren along South Black
Branch Road.
The river was nearly devoid of migrant waterbirds, but two flocks of
Ring-billed Gulls appeared to be migrants as they were way out in the river
and tightly clustered.
