Red-headed Woodpeckers nest in the woodlot across the road from the house, each
year. They occasionally venture onto our property but usually only for a brief
poking-around, before crossing the road again.
Until early this week…when one started hanging out in the large post oak tree
that shades the house on the south. It has been flying back-and-forth to the
ground, below the feeders, carrying sunflower seeds to the tree where it has
been stashing them in its many crevices. It was back at this routine, again
this morning, while I ate my breakfast. Our local Blue Jays (who only love us
for our sunflower seed offerings) have figured this out. Debby watched them,
yesterday, poking around the post oak to find the hidden sunflower seeds left
by the Woodpecker. She also saw the Woodpecker in the birdbath, yesterday!
I don’t think this tree is a potential Red-headed nest site, but can’t help
hoping and wondering. They are remarkably lovely creatures.
