My nephew stopped by this morning, grousing about some oak boxing he had
bought. He bought a stack of 14 foot planks all banded together. When he took
the bands off, the planks on the inside of the stack were covered with white
mold. I drove up to look at them to see if they were ruined. They were not.
Just needed separating to air out. On the way home, I already intended to slow
down going by a wet spot to see if any shorebirds were there. Before even
getting to the wet spot, a Red-headed Woodpecker flew up from the right-of-way
and landed on a light pole further up the road. I came to a near stop, hoping
to herd it on down to my place. That didn’t work. It crossed the road into a
neighbor’s yard. Red-headed Woodpeckers have been absent from our neighborhood
for several years. Good to have one back.
