March 20th, Western Fulton County (mostly Lower Hickman Bottmos). Highlights:
lots of common waterfowl and shorebirds; best shorebirds were 2 early
Black-necked Stilts at Long Point; ca. 100 American Golden-Plovers; 600
Bonaparte's Gulls loafing at Open Pond when not feeding in surrounding fields;
at least 2 Le Conte's Sparrows at Long Point; 15 Brewer's Blackbirds; at least
20 Lapland Longspurs.

March 21st, Ky-Barkley Lakes. Highlights ... hard to put a scope up and not see
Lesser Scaup, Am Coots and D-cr Cormorants in view anywhere on either lake;
Glaucous Gull -- first-year on Ky Lake above the dam and another or same down
on the lake N of Birmingham Pt.; Great Black-backed Gull -- first-year on Ky
Lake above the dam (seen twice during day); Thayer's x Iceland Gull --
first-year bird ... probably the same one there in late January, very pale now
from fading and wear; los of common waterbirds to scan on both lakes, but only
one rarity ... Red-throated Loon -- a probable adult N of Birmingham Point on
Ky Lake; Common Loon -- at least 110 total counted at various points on Ky
Lake; a few Forster's Terns on Lake Barkley near Eureka and Kuttawa. Early
arrivals included a Louisiana Waterthrush singing at the Ky Sheriff's Ranch
near Ky Dam and 3 Great Egrets and several Black-crowned Night-Herons at
Kuttawa island. At Eureka Campground, I was standing among the trees on the
lake shore and about 15 Red-breasted Mergs landed up close and didn't see me;
several of the males in the group began doing their bowing courtship displays
making their very eery-sounding, wirey calls.
