Brian Wulker, Major Waltman, and I were able to get the Yellow Rail up again
this morning on my family's farm in Jefferson County. We had decent looks at it
in flight, but the vegetation is too thick to have any chance of finding it on
the ground. We also had a Marsh Wren, a couple of Sedge Wrens, and a Bobolink
in the field. Lyle Bontrager is going to stop by tomorrow afternoon
(tentatively around 300 ish?) to try to see it (I'm hoping it has stayed in
place with the off and on rain this afternoon and evening.
Jim Lowery sent me pics today confirming nesting of Black-bellied
Whistling-Ducks outside of New Concord in Calloway County for the second year
in a row. Again this year, young have just appeared in October; no idea why
they don't get started earlier???
I posted a few pics of a very cooperative American Woodcock (one of two) that
Lindsey McMahon discovered on the upper mudflats of Lake Nevin a couple of
weeks ago. At least this one bird has continued to feed during the daylight
hours within 50 ft. of hundreds of people passing along the boardwalk on the
Lake Nevin loop. Very special to get to watch one at leisure as it rocks along
