Did a tour of potential shorebird/wader spots yesterday, in part encouraged by
recent observations by Charlie. Didn't see much other that lots of Killdeer and
lots of Least Sandpipers. Only Great Egrets I saw on the day were collecting on
the outer margin of Shippingport Island at the heronry; not a single one in
Henderson/Union .....
Henderson Co.
Sand Slough (West Franklin Road) ... Green Heron, a gimpy Great Blue, and a few
Killdeer ... nearly dry
Horse Pond Slough (West Franklin Road) ... a nice pool well to north of road
seen only with a lengthy walk back farm lane ... about 100 Killdeer and 3 Least
Sandpipers
Horseshoe Road Sloughs (collectively) ... at least 325 Killdeer; at least 180
Least Sandipers, a few Spotted Sandpipers (including a juv that I feel certain
was locally hatched based on history of Spotties nesting on these sloughs when
present during summer), 1 Pectoral Sandpiper ... also heard an Upland Sandpiper
call twice but couldn't begin to tell from where.
KY 1574 Slough ... a few Killdeer and 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 2 of which were
juvies that were still growing in face feathers and guarded by an adult; also
feel certain these were locally hatched.
Union Co.
Uniontown-Mt. Vernon Road slough ... just a few Least and Great Blues with
35-40 Killdeer
Camp #9 ... 275+ Killdeer, 1 Pectoral Sp, and a 15-20 Least. Also saw an SY
male No. Harrier.
Camp #11 ... continues to be very poor habitat unfortunately; 1 Pectoral Sp, 1
Least Sp, 25-30 Killdeer.
