Three observers took part in the Ballard County CBC on December 29th. Portions of Ballard WMA, West Ky WMA, western McCracken County farmland, and Ballard County farmland were covered. The day began with cool rain showers, but ended with a spectacular sunset. Most of the morning was drippy, but the afternoon was mostly rain free. 82 species were recorded. Highlights included 15 spp of waterfowl, most visible from the gravel/paved loop that is accessible to the public during the winter closure season; these included 270+ flyover Snow Geese, ca. 35 Greater White-fronted Geese, all of the regular dabblers including several dozen Northern Shovelers, 2 Common Goldeneye and a Ruddy Duck; at least 15 Bald Eagles; at least 2 performing American Woodcocks; lots of woodpeckers including 9 Yel-bel Sapsuckers; 15 Ruby-crowned Kinglets; 67+ American Pipits; 25+ Lapland Longspurs; and 3 Le Conte's Sparrows. CBC Eurasian Collared-Doves are no longer that extraordinary, but 5 were found in La Center. The bottomland woods on the WMA were full of fruit eaters including many woodpeckers, and our limited sampling suggested that Red-headed Woodpeckers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, and Yellow-rumped Warblers were all extremely common. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
