At least four Hooded Mergansers were seen at gravel pits in Boone County on June 21. The gravel pits are located along Ky 20 approximately 1 mile southwest of Petersburg. These areas are private property so discretion should be used if visiting the site. Two birds, both appearing to be juveniles were present in a pit near Horsley Ferry Road. Another pit about one quarter mile further south, also had two birds that appeared to be juveniles. This sight had three immature/female birds last July. It seems quite likely that these birds represent nearby breeding. Also present were numerous Bank Swallows entering and leaving their nest cavities in hte gravel pit.
