Some birds of interest seen today from the observation deck at the Falls:

Black-crowned Night Heron     (35)
Great Egret     (6)
Great Blue Heron         (65)
Double-crested Cormorant      (32)         There are still 6 active nest on Shipping Port Island.
Mallard      (25)
Wood Duck     (5)
Canada Geese    (100+)   (observed one leusitic canda goose) It's  been hanging around for two weeks,  it's usually with a flock of canada geese on the outer fossil beds.

Peregrine Falcon     (1 adult)
Red-shouldered  Hawk  (1)
Black Vulture   (55)
Turkey Vulture  (40)
Belted Kingfisher  (1)
Killdeer      (1)

Shorebirds:  there was a flock of 6 shorebirds/peeps that I observed flying low in tight formation at two different times, but couldn't ID them since they never would land.

I observed the osprey nest (from Clark's Cabin) on Shippingport Island off and on for a period of 6 hours today.  At 9:30 AM there was one adult and one juvenile present.  The juvenile was jumping up and down testing it's wings.   Three hours later no birds were present.  So I hung around for a couple more hours and 4 birds were on the nest; 2 adults and 2 juveniles.

So, this year the osprey made it to the fledgling phase.  According to a bird behavior book after osprey take their first flight the young continue for a month to return to the nest each night to roost.

Yesterday, a Bald Eagle was reported on the outer fossil beds.

Good birding,
