Yesterday evening, April 18, 2009 at 8:05 PM, I observed three chimney swifts circling the large, round, brick chimney at Emmet Field Elementary School. This chimney is home to a large colony of chimney swifts. I personally observed approximately 500 birds at this location last September. Emmet Field is located at 120 Sacred Heart Lane, Louisville, KY 40206. Sacred Heart Lane is located off Frankfort Avenue. It is quite possible that the chimney swifts arrived prior to this date, maybe as early as a week ago. Unfortunately, I have been ill for the past week and unable to make observations. While chimney swifts aren't quite as exciting as cerulean warblers, their arrival at this chimney of my alma mater means spring has officially arrived in my book. Later in the year -- August and September -- the chimney swifts can be observed feeding on the wing across Frankfort Avenue over the twin pools of the Louisville Water Company's Crescent Hill Reservoir. Common nighthawks and barn swallows are frequent visitors at this time as well. One may also observe the chimney swifts coming to roost in large numbers at the chimney at that time of year. My thanks to Garrett Adams for informing me of the colony last year.
