we had quite a few bluebirds all last year (2 boxes had multiple nestings) but
just after our last super cold spell, we saw 5 bluebirds soaking wet, all
fluffed out sitting out of the wind on the ground, in a tiny bit of available
sunshine. since that day we've seen a total of 2 bluebirds. very sad.

think we only saw a single Eastern Bluebird along the route. This doesn't bode
well for the species following last week's cold spell. I have not been
impressed with the amount of soft mast food for birds like bluebirds this

Finally, last week there were as many as 18,000 Sandhill Cranes in the
agricultural land west of Cecilia in Hardin County. Matt and I drove the KY 86
corridor thru there this afternoon and saw a total of only *EIGHT*!!!!! Man
those things sure are stubborn about getting back to the breeding grounds . . .
