Yesterday I was cleaning out bird boxes on the farm in Sadieville and
discovered 5 dead bluebirds inside one of the boxes, very sad! I still saw a
few around but nothing like normal for this time of year. The box they were in
was relatively new one that had ventilation in the top and I wondered if it
didn’t provide adequate protection from the cold or if they would have perished
regardless. I didn’t find dead birds in the older boxes that didn’t have
ventilation in the top but not sure if they were bing used.

We had six all winter. Then, one died of injuries - possibly from a hawk.
Since the last stretch of extreme winter weather, I have only seen two. Our
woodpeckers seem to be missing as well.

We haven’t heard or seen the flock that lives around here since before the
cold weather. We had at least 8 coming to the birdbath and heard them
regularly on our walks. We still have Carolina wrens.

Bluebird numbers are definitely down from a month ago. Saw none at Pope Lick
Park today, where they usually are very visible, and only one at Beckley
Creek last week, down from double-digit numbers in early February.
Not terribly birdy either, but that also could be because some of the winter
birds have started heading north.

Meg and I went to Bernheim Forest today and saw four Eastern Bluebirds up on
the hill near the entrance to Wilson Fire Road. They were in a small mixed
flock with some Chickadees and Titmice, stayed around for about 5-10 minutes
and were gone. We heard at least two more near the Education Center. Saw one
Carolina Wren and heard two more. I worry about them all too.
Not super birdy today. Maybe other species hurt as well?

Matt Stickel and I drove a lot of miles across rural central KY today and I
think we only saw a single Eastern Bluebird along the route. This doesn't
bode well for the species following last week's cold spell. I have not been
impressed with the amount of soft mast food for birds like bluebirds this
winter and I'm afraid they are going to have suffered quite a high level of
mortality.
On the more favorable side, we did hear a few Carolina Wrens in expected
habitats so they may have fared better.
On the "sounds never heard before" front, I heard something I had never
heard anywhere day before yesterday. I was working in a woodlot on the
family farm and heard a Bald Eagle call. I looked up scanning overhead, but
no eagle. Then I realized that a *Blue Jay* had made the imitation! A first
for me.
Finally, last week there were as many as 18,000 Sandhill Cranes in the
agricultural land west of Cecilia in Hardin County. Matt and I drove the KY
86 corridor thru there this afternoon and saw a total of only *EIGHT*!!!!!
Man those things sure are stubborn about getting back to the breeding
grounds . . . .
