Hi John,
That close to downtown, I'd think peregrine is most likely. Also a merlin is a
really active bird generally. Not to say that one can't find a merlin just
sitting around, but that's a characteristic more common for a peregrine as
well. There's a decent size difference between the birds. Any general thoughts
on it's size (big like a red tail, or smaller like an oversized blue jay)?

The lower power binocs I carry in the car prevented me from i.d.ing the bird
perched on top of the steeple of Calvary baptist at mlk/high st. I hurried home
for the field binocs but of course the bird was gone upon return. I suspect
peregrine but mark's post and a field guide suggest a Merlin is possible. Any
thoughts on this? John Scott
