I watched a peregrine downtown about a 10 days ago. It was soaring above a
flock of pigeons, much to their dismay. It then changed interest and folded
into a steep dive and disappeared behind a building. Soon more pigeons were
dispersing in all directions. The next thing I saw was turkey vulture coming
from the south toward where I had last seen the peregrine, with the peregrine
(or a second one) harassing the vulture, clearly for just the sport of it.

Hi John,
That close to downtown, I'd think peregrine is most likely. Also a merlin is
a really active bird generally. Not to say that one can't find a merlin just
sitting around, but that's a characteristic more common for a peregrine as
well. There's a decent size difference between the birds. Any general
thoughts on it's size (big like a red tail, or smaller like an oversized blue
jay)?

Subject: [birdcky] Falcon?
The lower power binocs I carry in the car prevented me from i.d.ing the bird
perched on top of the steeple of Calvary baptist at mlk/high st. I hurried
home for the field binocs but of course the bird was gone upon return. I
suspect peregrine but mark's post and a field guide suggest a Merlin is
possible. Any thoughts on this? John Scott
