It may have been the rising temperatures this morning that got the birds
moving, but my yard was a beehive of activity. I had 25 species for the day.
The first bird of the day was a raven that we heard through our partly open
bedroom window just before sunrise. Twenty-six Cedar Waxwings and several
Robins were cleaning out the last of the Hawthorne berries at the edge of
the yard. The two mockingbirds that have been hanging around were feeding on
the beauty berries near the yard stream. At least 5 Yellow-rumped Warblers
were still darting around the yard and coming down to drink and bathe in the
stream. A Ruby-crowned Kinglet nervously flitted from branch to branch in
the birch tree over the pond. I was surprised to see a Brown Thrasher this
late. The few that don't migrate spend their winters in the valleys away
from the cold winds higher up. White-throated Sparrows fed under the seed
feeders along with Chipping Sparrows and cardinals. Both male and female
Hairy Woodpeckers came in to eat some suet. Two brightly colored Blue Jays
were flashing blue as they flew around the yard. One of them came down for a
