Hi Sarah,
We also have a rare book collection and our library aide (a part-time paid
employee) used Abe Books and other rare book sites to place values on each
book. We have thankfully not been asked to discard this collection and it is
currently in a nice built in bookcase behind glass doors.
Really there is no way for you to provide an accurate (or even approximate)
valuation without doing this research. Perhaps a parent volunteer could help
out if the administration must have this information quickly.
Best of luck on this project.

Subject: [baisl] Valuing Rare/Special collections
Hello collective brain...
Our school has a rare/old books collection of about 12-1500 items. At one
point, there was a valuation done - before I came – over 10 years ago. The
school cannot find a copy of the valuation and my administrators are asking me
if the collection is valuable or not – with the eye to possibly disband, move
it, etc. As you know, space is always an issue on campuses... has anyone had to
deal with this? I welcome any and all suggestions. Of course, I can probably
get a general idea about some of our first editions, but I truly do not have
time to do searches on all of the items. Of course, they would like this
information as soon as possible!
Many thanks,
Sarah
