When I was first here I highlighted our Rare Book collection in the Library
Newsletter which goes out to faculty and staff. That did not create a rush of
teachers coming in to the library to see it however. 😊 Thankfully history is
valued pretty highly here and we have not been asked to use these books other
than to keep them archived and safe. I enjoy pointing out the lovely built in
bookcases and books to parents and prospective students at our Open House day.
Once in a great while (every few years) an interested student will ask to see
one of the books which makes my day, week and month! It’s fun to get the book
out and have the student wear gloves to touch it. Even if gloves aren’t really
necessary it teaches them about valuing history and artifacts and makes the
whole thing just feel like more fun!
Good luck, I like your idea of curated electronic displays.

Thanks, Tana-
Yes- I was wondering if anyone had gone through the experience of having to
justify the collection in a quick manner. Thank you for the volunteer idea. I
will push for some extra help with this. Is your collection utilized for any
projects (or do you highlight any parts of the collection throughout the year?)
Ours is not utilized for projects, though if I had more time, I would love to
create some curated electronic displays of some of the items.
Best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
We also have a rare book collection and our library aide (a part-time paid
employee) used Abe Books and other rare book sites to place values on each
book. We have thankfully not been asked to discard this collection and it is
currently in a nice built in bookcase behind glass doors.
Really there is no way for you to provide an accurate (or even approximate)
valuation without doing this research. Perhaps a parent volunteer could help
out if the administration must have this information quickly.
Best of luck on this project.

Subject: [baisl] Valuing Rare/Special collections
Hello collective brain...
Our school has a rare/old books collection of about 12-1500 items. At one
point, there was a valuation done - before I came – over 10 years ago. The
school cannot find a copy of the valuation and my administrators are asking me
if the collection is valuable or not – with the eye to possibly disband, move
it, etc. As you know, space is always an issue on campuses... has anyone had to
deal with this? I welcome any and all suggestions. Of course, I can probably
get a general idea about some of our first editions, but I truly do not have
time to do searches on all of the items. Of course, they would like this
information as soon as possible!
Many thanks,
Sarah
