Hi all,
In research about any perspectives, religious or otherwise, there will be
biases. I don't think it is effective to use a simple checklist of yes/no
credibility by text characteristic to evaluate credibility. Instead, the
student has to evaluate the text as a whole; the student must recognize
biases and determine if those biases invalidate the information. Most .orgs
contain donate buttons. But, that doesn't mean that all .orgs are not
useful for research. Instead, the contents, authors, purposes, and language
also need to be evaulated. Consider NPR. Yes, NPR.org does maintain
political biases. However, we can't discount outright the information on
that site simply because of the donate button on the top of the page. I
think it's really important to help our students understand that everything
has an agenda that we have to sift through.
We need to use our databases as a starting point for well-researched
foundational information. However, as our students learn to become
digitally literate, we must teach them to search beyond our databases and
use the valuable resources outside of them. Biases are part of life and we
have to teach our students not to be afraid of them.

Infobase has a fairly good World Religions database that I use a fair
bit. It has access to several of the encyclopdias etc, and some nice audio
pieces which I like. The details on canonization would be fine for 8-9th
grade, but lacks some for 12th grade say. Lots of information on saints
both specific and in general. I am sure you rep could arrange a demo
quickly.
