For summer reading, students at each grade (rising 5th-8th) have one
required book and are asked to read another 2 books from a long list (3-6
pages) of choices. Our required books for the coming summer are:
5th - *Fish in a Tree* by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
6th - *Peak* by Roland Smith
7th - *Breaking Through* by Francisco Jiménez
8th - TBD - Has been *The House on Mango Street* (students did not enjoy
it), *The Help* and *Funny in Farsi* in various past years
Hope this helps!
Stephanie

Hi Lisa,
The Language Arts teacher and I haven't had the bandwidth to work out the
summer reading list, but we'll be getting to it very soon.
Last summer, rising 8th graders all read Everything Sad is Untrue by
Daniel Nayari and had to select one other non-fiction or historical fiction
book. We suggested these, but they could pick their own. We bought the book
for them if they decided before the last week of school.
I am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World
(Young
Reader’s Edition) by Malala Yousafzai
It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival Resilience and Redemption
(Young Adult
Adaptation) by Laura Hillenbrand
We are not Free: Tracy Chee
Life Without Limits: Nick Vujicic
Enrique’s Journey: by Sonia Nazario
Rising 7th graders all read What Is Poetry? The Essential Guide to
Reading and Writing Poems by
Michael Rosen. They also had to select a fiction book from this list and
we bought the book for them.
Each Tiny Spark by Pablo Cartaya
The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya
Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson
Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson
Ellen Outside the Lines by A.J. Sass
Rising 6th graders selected 2-3 books each from a different
genre (fiction, non-fiction, mystery, etc.) and shared their "reading
playlist" with the class as a poster or slideshow.

Thanks Kari, this is fabulous but I'm really looking for the specific MS
reads that teachers have students read during the summer. Each year we have
one specific book for each grade along with a few others as free choice. I
work with the Humanities team to figure out what these books are. This year
I'm at a loss and could use some great ideas.
Best, Lisa

Hi all --
I just updated the Bookopolis Summer Reading lists
<https://bookopolis.com/#/summer-reading-2023>. Feel free to use/share
our free reading challenges, READ-O cards, and summer book clubs with your
students and their families. Students can earn fabulous free books from
Random House, Harper Collins, and other publishers when they complete a
READ-O card or log either 10 books or 1,000 minutes on Bookopolis. See
details here <https://bookopolis.com/#/summer-reading-2023>.

Hello,
I'm looking to see what other schools are doing for their MS summer
reads. With the countdown to summer coming up I would love to have some
conversations about this. Thanks!
Best, Lisa
