We genrefied our young adult collection a few years ago. We chose our own
sections taking into account the way students ask for books. I'm not a fan
of genre labels as they cover too much of the title on the spine, so we
bought color labels

from Amazon and used those. Then Annette made awesome genre headings for
the shelves out of the same color paper as the label. It all took a good
bit of time as we needed to make necessary genre corrections in the catalog
plus add the shelving locations by genre. And just to add to the fun, we
found that the purple labels we chose for the fantasy books were the only
color that faded after a couple of years. That's the genre with the largest
number of books (of course) and they all had to be relabeled.
The hardest part was deciding the genre for some of the books! We just made
our best call and then made sure to include multiple genre headings in the
cataloging if that was appropriate. We're very happy with the outcome -
just be prepared to invest a lot of time in the project. Good luck-
