Steve, I tried from my northwest Phoenix house. I used an 8 mm plossl with my 8 inch f4.5. First I tried without a filter and saw a "haze" around Saturn. I couldn't determine if the haze was from the Crab or refractive light due to the high cloud cover. Then I tried both a deep sky and an OIII filter to cut down on the Saturn glow. I could never be sure if I saw the nebula rather than a result from the high cirrus clouds. I used a 9.5mm Lanthanum eyepiece. There were clouds that came and went across the field while Saturn passed in front of the Crab Nebula. I never saw any hint of the Crab Nebula with this instrument. Saturn is just overwhelmingly bright compared to a deep sky object. > > Steve Coe > > stevecoe@xxxxxxxxx > Author: Deep Sky Observing--The Astronomical Tourist > Saguaro Astronomy Club web site: > www.saguaroastro.org > > -- > See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please > send personal replies to the author, not the list. > -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
