The USFS “used to be” aware of our presence there for observing, and it was
“approved”…
Ala… no “camping” (as per USFS regs)…
We never did “get it in writing”… But there were no issues, and they used to
have a “host” there during the trail work project. He was aware of our
permission.
Wish we would have had it in writing...

For anyone using the Picketpost Trailhead for observing there are now two
"Hosts" in residence at the trailhead. Because there have been many things
going on after dark, they have been instructed to close and lock the gate
after sundown. The hosts were completely oblivious to the fact that
Picketpost was a dark sky site for EVAC and various other groups. I
convinced one of the hosts, Mike, to just close the gate and not lock me in
last night. I will try to call the USFS person in charge Monday to clear
this up.
Having the gate closed after dark is not necessarily a bad idea. It should
keep out the undesirables looking for a secluded party site.
